Grade 3, 4 and 5 Sports Day

The final Inter house event of the school year, Sports Day, will take place this Friday.

All students will need to have the following for the day:

  • Swim suit, goggles (optional), swim cap( optional) or long hair tied back, towel and everything in a bag
  • Inter-House t-shirt on, shorts, athletic shoes. No sandals or crocs should be worn.
  • Water bottle and hat

The event is scheduled from 7:20 AM to 11:30 AM (approximately). Hope to see you there!

Additional Languages

Kiswahili? French? Spanish?

Additional Language Surveys will be coming home this Wednesday 11th May! These are the annual forms that Grade 2, 3 and 4 students and their parents fill out to inform the school of their Additional Language request for the following year. Please fill out the form and return it to your homeroom teacher no later than Tuesday 17th May.

This year there is a slight change in the selection process for Additional Languages.

What remains the same? Children already in an Additional Language this year (Grade 3 and 4) and who request the same language for the following year will be guaranteed a space.

What is different? The remaining spaces will be selected randomly from the pool of students requesting a language change.

There is also a change in what happens during Additional Language time.

What remains the same? Children in the same grade level all have Additional Languages at the same time. English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Skills Group (for Learning Support students) also happen at that time.

What is different? This year, we will also offer a Language Enrichment program during Additional Language time. Parents of those students participating in the Language Enrichment Program should have already been informed, and this will be indicated on the form.

Grade 3 Aquathon Inter-house this Friday, May 6th

Please join us on Friday morning for the Aquathon. This event includes a 2 or 3 lap run, followed by a 50 or 100 meter swim.

All students should come prepared wearing their swim suit and Inter- House tee-shirt and sports shoes. They should also bring a hat, towel, googles, and water bottle. 

We will begin at 7:20, and should be finished by 9 AM.

Friday grade 3 assembly

Friday, April 22, 3B and 3R will present their learning from the year in an interactive session over periods 1 and 2. Grades 4 and 5 will come to see the demonstrations during period 1 and grade 2 and 3W and 3H will come during period 2. The students will be in different locations around the new covered court. Parents are welcome at any time from 7:20-8:40.

Grade 3 is learning about how water is used by different groups in society and how some people have limited access to clean water. Mr. Andre Bald, with the World Bank and father of Alila (and Avery),IMG_5838 came to help the students understand all of the demandIMG_5835s on water. We learned that Tanzania gets 40% of its electricity from hydroelectric power stations and how we need to balance the need to protect the water for our natural resources as well as provide enough water for cities, factories, and farms. He led the students inIMG_5844 an activity to encourage protecting trees and balancing water usage among all of the users. The activity was very thought provoking.

Grade 3 looks at news

Grade 3 students are inquiring into water as a finite resource,  and finding current information has become important to understanding what’s happening in Dar es Salaam and the world.

Classes came to the library last week to think about what it means for newspaper and magazine articles to be current and to look at online resources for news.

They used links from the IST Destiny homepage.

Once students found an article they were interested in, they were asked to find the date and bring it back to the whole group.

Together again, we could talk about whether or not the pages had dates.  We looked at varied formats for the dates we found.

Some pages weren’t dated at all – and Grade 3 students realized that thinking about when an article was published is part of assessing whether or not it’s a good source for news.
