In our unit, ‘How We Express Ourselves’ the students continue to develop their understanding of symbolism. Ms.Tabitha talked to us about Sign Language and showed us different signs and symbols to communicate. We learned the importance of also using ‘facial expressions’ to communicate a message. In maths, we are exploring place value with addition and subtraction, developing our concept of time and solidifying our skip counting skills. In writing we have started poetry and are having fun reading and writing free verse poems. We have worked to write poems collaboratively in small groups and will now attempt our own by looking at objects with our ‘poet eyes’.

This week in Grade 2, we started our new unit “How We Express Ourselves”. We began by discussing various ways we can express our feelings and we decided that this unit would help us become better communicators. During this unit we will be looking at how “people use symbols to be expressive and to communicate.”
We have had fun in the classroom using non-verbal communication and having walks around the school looking for different signs and symbols. Please feel free to take photos of signs and symbols you see with your child so that they may bring them in to school to share with the class.
This is a very exciting unit and the children are very enthusiastic about it!
