Unit of Inquiry
Central Idea: We can reduce our impact on the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling.

In what ways can I expect my child to show their understanding?
Your child will be able to give example of different types of materials and the ways they are used.
Your child will be able to explain how certain materials impact the environment.
Your child can choose to use fewer materials that have a devastating impact on the world’s environment.
How can I help my child?
Talk about different activities you do in your home to help the environment (recycle materials, take a shopping bag with you to the supermarket rather than use plastic bags) and discuss why.
Identify materials as you are shopping, playing, at home, in the car or on a holiday.
Talk to family and friends about when they started making choices to help the environment and initiatives that they know about in Dar es Salaam.
Talk to your child about the choices they may make and the consequences that can be good and not good for the environment.
Discuss what is in your child’s snack and lunch box. What could be changed to make our choices more friendly to the environment (use a container rather than a plastic bag, use a drink bottle rather than buying water bottles that get thrown away)?
(If your child is a second language learner, they will benefit greatly, by discussing these concepts with you in their home language. What is an environment? What is a material? How can we reduce, reuse and recycle? The choices we make have an impact on others, the environment and ourselves. They will then transfer that knowledge to their second language taught at school).
Math – Over the next 6 weeks we will be looking closely at the following concepts in math.
Introducing the concept of half and quarter in relation to a whole
Identifying halves and quarters in their environment
Shape and Space
Naming 2D shapes (e.g. hexagon, octagon, rhombus, trapezoid)
Naming 3D shapes (e.g. triangular prism, cylinder, pyramid, sphere)
Understanding and using vocabulary to describe 2D and 3D shapes (e.g. corners, sides, faces, edges)
Sorting 2D and 3D shapes according to their properties
Reading and writing time to the hour and half hour in analogue and digital
Introducing reading time to the quarter hour in an analogue and digital
